How do coral reef ecosystems help protect coastlines?

About 500 million people depend on coral reefs for protection from storm surges, as these natural barriers reduce wave energy that would otherwise damage coastal communities. Coral reef ecosystems help to shield roughly 100,000 miles of coastline in more than 100 countries and territories, mitigating the effects of waves, storms, and erosion. This protection is crucial for preserving communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems along the coast - especially on an island for instance.

How do coral reef ecosystems help take care of people?

Approximately 1 billion people worldwide rely on coral reef ecosystems, whether as a vital source of food or as their primary income through fisheries, tourism, and related industries. Coral reefs support the diets of many coastal communities by providing fish and other marine organisms. Additionally, they are essential for the livelihoods of these communities, offering jobs and economic opportunities in sectors like fishing and tourism. Coral reef ecosystems generate approximately $36 billion per year worldwide.

How do coral reef ecosystems help the rest of the ocean?

Coral reefs are incredibly biodiverse, supporting about 25% of all marine life despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. This includes thousands of species of fish, invertebrates, and other marine organisms that depend on coral reefs for habitat, food, and breeding grounds. If coral reef ecosystems were to disappear, it would result in the loss of habitat for about 1/4 of all marine life, leading to a significant decline in marine biodiversity and ecosystem health across the ocean.

Like the coral reefs, our efforts to restore and protect them are strongest when we come together as one.
